Bergolo

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 67 · Postal code: 12074

Of all the municipalities in the province of Cuneo, Bergolo takes up the least ground: a plateau in the eastern Alta Langa, on the right bank of the Bòrmida di Millesimo. Thin soil and poor roads kept it from ever reaching three hundred inhabitants, and from 1929 to 1947 it was not a municipality at all, absorbed into Cortemilia; independence came back only after the war.

The arms are azure with a silver cotise, a sword above and an olive branch below. In the cemetery stands the Romanesque chapel of San Sebastiano, which goes back to 1100 and is recorded as the old parish church; restoration has returned it to its original lines. The stone houses, emptied by migration to the cities, have been repaired since the nineteen-seventies, and on land once under cereals, vines and chestnuts the hazel groves of the Tonda Gentile delle Langhe have taken over.
