Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot
📅 Every year, on 17 January
On 17 January Levice, a small municipality of 246 inhabitants, celebrates its patron Saint Anthony the Abbot; the territory is dotted with "bric", the Piedmontese word for hills.
Levice stands in the Alta Langa, on a ridge above the Bormida, on the edge between Piedmont and Liguria. The Romans knew it as Livicium or Levicium, and charters of 991 give the name as Levix and Levesj. At the highest point of the village lie the ruins of a round medieval watchtower, set there to watch the whole Bormida valley from Cortemilia to Monesiglio and to signal to the strongholds around, the castle of Prunetto among them.
The tower was left in that state in 1796. At the start of the Italian campaign the French army, making for the Alessandria plain, came to Levice from Prunetto and found the villagers waiting with Austro-Piedmontese units; the French won, and the tower was reduced to rubble. Moving on towards Cortemilia they clashed with the Austrians again, at a spot still called Campo della Battaglia. The town's arms are plain: a dark shield crossed by a lighter band, between a laurel and an oak branch tied at the foot.
