Torre Bormida

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 211 · Postal code: 12050

Torre Bormida lies in the upper western branch of the Val Bormida, on the Bormida di Millesimo, its houses scattered between the valley floor and the ridges of the Alta Langa. Medieval documents call the place Turre Burmea and Turri de Burmia. The earliest possible mention is from 991: among the lands granted to the Benedictine monastery of San Quintino di Spigno, founded by marquis Anselmo, son of Aleramo, are six farmsteads at a place called Turre, which may be either Torre Bormida or nearby Torre Uzzone.

The oldest church stood beside the castle and was replaced, between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, by the present parish church of the Assumption. The village also lost and regained itself: in 1928, under the Fascist plan to merge the smallest municipalities, it was abolished and made a hamlet of Cortemilia, and became an independent comune again only in 1948.
