Feast of Pope Marcellinus
📅 Every year, on 26 April
On 26 April Macra, a municipality of 52 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, celebrates its patron Pope Marcellinus, after whom the parish church is named.
Macra, L'Arma in Occitan and Piedmontese, lies in the Valle Maira and depended on the priory of San Lorenzo di Oulx: a document of 1176 records that the inhabitants owed its clergy barrels of wine. The comune is split between the main village and the hamlets of Albaretto and Camoglieres, and its coat of arms is a single image, an uprooted tree on a blue field.
Above the Maira torrent stands the chapel of San Salvatore, founded between 1120 and 1142 by those same religious of Oulx: one nave, a truss ceiling, a bell tower at the apse end, a bellcote facade and a later porch on two columns. Inside, late Romanesque frescoes run along the walls with scenes from Genesis and a banquet with a dancer, perhaps Salome; those in the apse are fifteenth-century. It counts as one of the most important Romanesque cycles in western Piedmont.
