Oulx

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,160 · Postal code: 10056

The name first appears in 880 as Ulces: behind it lies the Celtic olka, an enclosed field, and probably the name of an owner, Ulkos. From there the French form Oulx and the Italianised Ulzio, which was the comune's official name from 1937 to 1960.

Just outside the town lies the Borello lake, also called the Oulx pond: it was a peat and clay pit, dug to build the Fréjus rail tunnel, and once abandoned the groundwater filled it. Today it is a wetland where alpine and lowland species live side by side, under a reserve; organic deposits, though, are slowly silting it up.

Oulx celebrates Saint Roch on 16 August; the Free Fair, which reached its 526th edition in 2020, has roots going back to 1494, when the town, crossed by Charles VIII's armies, obtained from the king the right to hold an annual fair exempt from foreign taxes, now held on the first Sunday of October.
