San Damiano Macra

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 439 · Postal code: 12029

San Damiano Macra lies in the lower Val Maira and gathers three former comuni: Pagliero, Lottulo and Paglieres. The village first appears in the founding deed of the abbey of Caramagna Piemonte, of 1028. After the plague of 1716 the decimated people of San Damiano and Pagliero merged into one comune.

Little of the artistic past survives, after a German reprisal fire and recent building: a few mullioned windows on old houses, and the Berardi arms, of 1507, on an octagonal slab of a stone fountain. The parish church of Santi Cosma e Damiano, much remodelled, keeps the doorway carved by the Zabreri brothers, from the original fifteenth-century building.
