Demonte

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,059 · Postal code: 12014

Demonte lies in the Stura valley and is one of the Occitan communes of Piedmont. In the eighteenth century it was fortified by Alessandro Vittorio Papacino, and on the Podio, a morainic hill outside the village, the Forte della Consolata went up: Napoleon destroyed it, and the ruins are what is left.

Under the German occupation the partisan Lorenzo Spada hid here the five members of a Jewish family from Ferrara and arranged and paid for their escape, which ended well on the night of the eighth of February 1944. Wounded in a firefight, he was arrested and hanged in the village square, which now bears his name; in 1974 Yad Vashem recognised him as Righteous Among the Nations. Lalla Romano was born here in 1906.
