Roccabruna

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,589 · Postal code: 12020

The name Roccabruna turns up in a public deed of 1028, when neither Dronero nor Cuneo yet existed: marquis Olderico Manfredi and his wife Berta gave the new abbey of Caramagna some estates, Rocabruna among them. The town arms set on a blue field the two crags above the hamlets, Rocca Cubiera and Rocca Bruna.

A document of 1226 on the privileges of the Oulx chapter names the churches of San Giuliano and Santa Maria di Foglianzane: the sanctuary at Foglienzane is still there, its porch in front and its stone bell tower to one side. The village long followed Dronero, but gave itself its own statutes and won full separation in 1694.
