The monastery of Santa Maria was founded in 1028 by Olderico Manfredi, marquis of Turin, and his wife Berta; they named Almighty God himself as its heir, and left its care to Benedictine nuns, so that "day and night they raise prayers to our Creator". The nuns did not always follow those instructions: in 1444, because of their conduct, they were replaced by the corresponding male order.

From 1250 the town gave itself a communal government with an elected council, the Credenza: two mayors and some twenty members with set duties, among them two masters of the roads, three ragionatori for taxes and — a coveted post — two assessors of wine and meat, who checked the quality of the food.
