Feast of San Nicolao
📅 Every year, on the second Sunday after Easter
On the second Sunday after Easter Vernante, a municipality of 1,217 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, celebrates its patron San Nicolao.
Charters call the village Alvergnandus in 1041, then Alvernantus, Alvergnandum, Alvergnantus, and finally Vernante. The root seems to be the Celtic verna, the black alder that fills the valley: the town put it on its coat of arms, a tree on a gold field with the motto In silvis salus, health in the woods.
Since 1280 the Tourousela has watched over the roofs, the keep raised by Pietro Balbo, count of Tenda, to defend the county. Its tower is an irregular hexagon, and an underground passage, now impassable, ran down to the Vermenagna to water the horses. In 1966 it was declared unsafe and blown up; the pieces were recovered and put back.
