Feast of San Bernardo
📅 Every year, on 20 August
On 20 August Roaschia, a municipality of 138 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, celebrates its patron San Bernardo.
Roaschia lies at the bottom of a side valley of the Valle Gesso, shut in by sheer walls: cool in summer, hard in winter. Its people never all lived in the village but spread over fifty-two hamlets on the sunnier slopes, nearly all empty now. The town's arms say the rest: chequy silver and blue, a red eight-spoked wheel over an axe and a mace crossed in saltire, and the motto MONTES IN CIRCUITU EIUS, the mountains all around.
For generations this was a home of transhumant shepherds, who moved with flocks and families between the high pastures and the plain, and the frabosana-roaschina sheep still carries the village name. In a century depopulation took away 93% of the residents counted in 1911. Below the houses, where the limestone opens, lie the Grotte del Bandito, studied since the nineteenth century for cave-bear bones and now a nature reserve.
