Feast of San Pietro in Vincoli
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of August
On the first Sunday of August Limone Piemonte, a municipality of 1,490 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, celebrates its patron San Pietro in Vincoli.
The name Limonus first appears in a parchment of 1290 and has nothing to do with the lemon: it comes from the Celtic limo, the elm, though other origins have been proposed. The lemon has been on the town's arms since at least 1614.
Before the railway tunnel opened, people lived by carrying goods with mules, oxen and horses between the port of Nice and the Piedmontese plain; later many emigrated to the Riviera, while the train made Limone one of the Alps' first ski resorts. Since 1947 the French border has run alongside, after Tenda went to France; the old centre is still alpine, packed around the parish bell tower.
