Vinadio

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 684 · Postal code: 12010

Vinadio lies in the Stura di Demonte valley, one of the Occitan comuni of Piedmont; its territory is the second largest in the region after Alessandria, and until 1947 it took in the upper Ciastiglione valley, later passed to France. On the arms a bunch of grapes echoes the wine in the old form of the name, Vinaium; the Latin motto reads ‘like a fruitful vine’.

The Forte Albertino, built by the Savoys under the Kingdom of Sardinia, blocks the valley floor: a paved causeway leads in, and ten kilometres of passages run inside. Sant'Anna, a hamlet, holds the highest Christian place of worship in Europe; its name is on a mineral water.
