Feast of the Nativity of Mary
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of September
On the first Sunday of September Aisone, a municipality of 254 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, celebrates the Nativity of Mary.
The name probably comes from the isou, the pools where hemp was retted: the Stura di Demonte runs alongside and pools were many. The form may be Occitan, still spoken in the valley; as Aysone the village appears in documents on the fiefs of the marquisate of Saluzzo. Above the houses open the caves that digs in the nineteen sixties and nineties recognised as the most anciently inhabited place in the southern Western Alps, used season by season since the late Neolithic; they are now a nature reserve.
The parish church of the Nativity of Mary was built by Benedictines on the remains of an older one; in 1744 French and Spanish armies destroyed the church and only the Romanesque bell tower survived, five storeys of single and paired windows under a pyramidal spire. Inside stands a font dated 1491, cut with the Savoy motto fert. Elsewhere stand the remains of a stone aqueduct that carried water to the Morra, where a mill or a forge hammer worked.
