Pietraporzio

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 91 · Postal code: 12010

Pietraporzio stands in the Valle Stura, on the river of the same name, just below the Colle della Maddalena, on the French border. The name is said to come from petra porci, the pig's stone, after a large boulder by the Stura whose shape recalled the animal's back. The parish church of Santo Stefano is the newer one, put up at the end of the eighteenth century, when the old one grew too small; of that older church, recorded in 1386 in a register of churches under the archbishop of Turin, the bell tower survives, inside the cemetery, known to everyone as the Catre Loupes after the animal figures at the corners of its spire.

In the Vallone del Piz grows the lou merze gros, a larch reckoned to be over six hundred and fifty years old: twenty-three metres tall, forking three metres above the ground, its roots spilling onto the old military road. It has always served as a landmark in the valley, above all in fog. At Pontebernardo, where the skier Stefania Belmondo grew up, the shepherding ecomuseum centres on the Sambucana sheep.
