Feast of Sant'Alessandro
📅 Every year, on 26 August
On 26 August Briona, a municipality of 1,234 inhabitants in the province of Novara, celebrates its patron Sant'Alessandro.
The name comes from Brigodunum, a Latinised Celtic word for a fortress on a height, and the coat of arms says the same, with a silver castle: the castle of Briona. The village sits where the Novara plain rises into hills, along the Roggia Mora.
The church of Sant'Alessandro, by the cemetery, grew in two stages: the northern part dates from the eleventh century, while the nave and the southern aisle were finished in the last quarter of the twelfth. At the hamlet of Proh a single-arched medieval bridge crosses the Roggia Mora: it was the only way over, so tolls were collected there. Today it stands abandoned.
