The houses cluster on a morainic ridge between the Sesia and the Agogna, ringed on three quarters by rice and grain, with vines on the rise behind. The suffix -engo points to a Lombard origin. It went from the bishops of Novara to the Tornielli, who gave part of it to the Ferrero and in 1730 the rest to the Comunità di Barengo, the inhabitants themselves.
Above them stands the castle, an irregular brick quadrilateral with machicolated corner towers, much rebuilt in the late nineteenth century, still private. Until 1443 the parish sat inside the walls, in the castle chapel of Santa Maria; only then came Santa Maria Assunta, just outside, against the hill.
