Caltignaga

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,585 · Postal code: 28010

The name is thought to come from the Latin Celticus ager, the field of the Celts, and for once the etymology has proof underfoot: the stele known as the San Bernardino stone, which carries the longest Gaulish inscription ever found in Italy, came from here and now sits in the lapidary museum of Novara cathedral.

Along the road to Lake Orta runs the only Roman aqueduct ever found in the Novara area, uncovered by digs that began in 1964. It carried water to Novaria, but the place where it drew that water has never been located. Of the Caccia fief little survives: French armies destroyed the castle in 1525.
