Casaleggio Novara

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 930 · Postal code: 28060

Casaleggio Novara is a rice-field village whose one monument stands outside it: the church of Sant'Antonio abate, a three-aisled ruin among the fields. Of the Romanesque church only the outer walls and the bell tower are left, the tower rebuilt in the fifteenth century; the Baroque chancel came later. The first written record is from 1556, a benefice founded there for a feast-day mass.

A pastoral visit of 1573 places it seven hundred paces from the village, thirty paces long and sixteen wide; a canon later noted it had no vault, only a plain roof. Modern guesses hold it once had smaller buildings around it for travellers and pilgrims.
