Cameri

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 10,770 · Postal code: 28062

Cameri lies on the eastern edge of Piedmont, bounded by the river Ticino and the Terdoppio stream and crossed by the Cavour and Regina Elena canals. Together with eleven other comuni it belongs to the Piedmontese Ticino park, whose headquarters it hosts: which is why the town tells its story through water and floodplain woods rather than monuments.

Versions of the name abound: the most accepted derives it from Castra Marii, the camp of Gaius Marius as he waited for the Cimbri, whom he then faced towards Vercelli. In the town the three confraternities counted for a great deal, the Whites, the Reds and the light blues, named after the colour of their robes: two of those dialect nicknames still distinguish two churches. The airport dates from 1909.
