Bellinzago Novarese

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 9,375 · Postal code: 28043

Bellinzago lies on the Novara plain, between the Ticino and the irrigated fields, and consists of the main settlement and two hamlets, Badia di Dulzago and Cavagliano. On 31 May 1863 the word Novarese was added to the name, to tell it apart from other places called Bellinzago. With eleven other comuni it belongs to the Piedmontese Ticino park.

Inside the park lies the WWF oasis of the Baraggia di Bellinzago, created to protect the Italian spadefoot toad, a rare species. West of the village stands the Mulino Vecchio, the only one of the valley's many mills still working: in the Eighties the park authority bought and restored it, and today it is a regional centre for environmental education. The parish church of San Clemente is a design by Alessandro Antonelli.
