On 10 August Mandello Vitta, a municipality of 244 inhabitants in the province of Novara, celebrates its patron Saint Lawrence (san Lorenzo).
Mandello Vitta began as a borgo franco in the early thirteenth century, laid out by Robaconte da Mandello, podestà of Novara, a Milanese whose family came from Mandello del Lario; the village still carries his name. It stood on the strada Biandrina, the medieval road from Biandrate to Romagnano and the Valsesia, watching over it: the road ran beneath the tower's two archivolts, now walled up, and the guard post collected the tolls.
Between Mandello and Castellazzo Novarese a fourth-century glass cup came to light almost undamaged inside a sarcophagus, inscribed "Bibe, vivas multis annis"; it is now in the archaeological museum in Milan. The Caccia held the fief until the eighteenth century, then came the Vitta, whose name the comune took in 1863; in 1928 Mandello was absorbed into Vicolungo and only in 1954 became autonomous again. The arms show an egret, five golden ears and the Caccia bands.
