Biandrate

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,200 · Postal code: 28061

Locally the village is Biandraa, Biandrà in Piedmontese; both forms still live beside the official name. Of the eleventh-century castle only ruins are left. The parish church carries the name of Saint Columbanus, the missionary monk who came from Ireland, and three eighteenth-century buildings complete the place: the church of Santa Caterina, the sanctuary of the Madonna della Preiera and the town hall.

Santa Caterina is known by its pink and white front, closed above by a pediment and marked out by pilasters and niches. The inscription D O M runs over the wooden door, and at one side the bell tower rises under a small onion dome.
