Cerano

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 6,728 · Postal code: 28065

Cerano lies on the Piedmontese bank of the Ticino, in farmland cut by canals. The Latin name Cerretanum first appears in a document of 969 bearing the seal of Otto I, which granted the place to the bishop of Vercelli: it is thought to come from the Turkey oak, once common on the plain, which also figures in the town's arms.

It was destroyed twice. In 1156 the Milanese, at war with Novara, razed its castle; the town rose again and walled itself, adding the Roggia Cerana, dug in 1202 partly for defence. In 1356 Galeazzo II Visconti destroyed it again, to punish it for siding with Montferrat and for the raids its people made on the Ticino against Milan.
