Feast of San Silvano
📅 Every year, on the second Sunday of July
On the second Sunday of July Sozzago, a municipality of 1,055 inhabitants in the province of Novara, celebrates its patron San Silvano.
On the map of the Duchy of Milan painted in 1581 for the Gallery of Maps in the Vatican Palaces the village appears as Sozzagno. Its arms carry the word SACIAGUM on a silver bend, with ten ears of rice and a frog below; locally they are said to eat a frog and a half.
The parish church of San Silvano, first dedicated to San Silano, stands just off the square. In 1829 it left the diocese of Novara for Vigevano, and the bishop of Novara took Gravellona Lomellina in exchange because it paid better; Sozzago stayed the only parish of the province of Novara under Vigevano until 2016, when the two were swapped back.
