Gravellona Lomellina

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,688 · Postal code: 27020

Two parishes have swapped places twice, two hundred years apart. Gravellona is in the province of Pavia and borders the diocese of Vigevano, but for centuries it belonged to that of Novara; from 1817 to 1829 it passed to Vigevano, and was then given back to Novara in exchange for the parish of Sozzago. On the twenty-sixth of June 2016 the Congregation for Bishops made the swap again the other way round: Novara ceded Gravellona to Vigevano and Vigevano returned Sozzago to Novara.

At the beginning of the twentieth century the village had more than three thousand two hundred inhabitants, then farming lost ground to the factories of Vigevano and Gravellona emptied to little more than nineteen hundred people. The reaction was unusual: since 1995 the village has held a Festival of Art, has filled with installations and has been recognised as a Village of Art, and in the early two-thousands the Park of the Three Lakes opened. The population has begun to rise again. In the town hall, meanwhile, there is a cat named Marina who has co-celebrated weddings. Two thousand six hundred and eighty-eight inhabitants in the province of Pavia.
