Garbagna Novarese

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,350 · Postal code: 28070

The oldest documents, from 840 on, call the village Carpania; by 1367 only Garbagna remains, and in 1863 Novarese was added to avoid confusion with the other Garbagna, in the province of Alessandria. Carpania is taken to mean a wood of hornbeams, trees that like dry ground: among the many woods here, that one clearly mattered enough to deserve a name. Other readings prefer a Franco-Provençal word for basket, or a Latin one for bush.

Outside the village stands the oratory of Santa Maria, known as Madonna di Campagna, a small building from the late eleventh century, its front in brick and plaster under a pediment. Inside are thirteen fifteenth-century frescoes, several from the Cagnola workshop.
