Marano Ticino

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,554 · Postal code: 28040

Marano Ticino sits on the Piedmontese bank of the river, in the nature park of the Ticino valley; westward the ground rises into morainic hills long suited to the vine. The name comes from Maranus, the land of a Mario; the second half is recent, since a decree of Victor Emmanuel II turned Marano into Marano Ticino only in 1862.

Little is left of the stronghold of 1260: villa Castiglioni Ostini is its eighteenth-century rebuilding, keeping traces of the curtain wall and a battlemented gate tower. East of the village stands San Pietro, the parish church until 1847: it sits on a terrace of river pebbles and brick courses, with a columned porch before the door and a bell turret on the ridge.
