Pombia

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,182 · Postal code: 28050

Before it was Pombia the place was Flavia Plumbia, with origins in Roman times. On the bank of the Ticino stand the ruins of Castel Domino and the Romanesque church of San Vincenzo in castro.

At nearby San Giorgio a Lombard arimannia and a small fort served the counts for two purposes at once: watching the gold workings along the Ticino and collecting tolls for crossing the river. The counts of Pombia, descended from Arduin king of Italy, held the castle until the twelfth century; in 1028 the title passed to Guido I, and from that branch came the counts of Biandrate.
