Feast of Saints Filippo and Giacomo
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of May
On the first Sunday of May Mezzomerico, a municipality of 1,176 inhabitants in the province of Novara, celebrates its patron saints Filippo and Giacomo.
The name of Mezzomerico goes back to the Mediomatrici, the Gaulish people mentioned by Caesar, Pliny the Elder and Tacitus, and through the form Mediomadrigo. An inscription with the name of Marcus Aemilius Valerianus shows the place was lived in under Rome; the surrounding fields also gave up a hoard of tremisses, the gold coins of the Lombard king Desiderius, now in the Castello museum in Milan.
The parish church of Santi Giacomo e Filippo was rebuilt in 1847 on the remains of a church already recorded in 1347, which stood inside the Boniperti castle: it is seen high up over a brick retaining wall, its bell tower and clock rising above the houses.
