Varallo Pombia

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 5,004 · Postal code: 28040

The name appears for the first time in a document of 885, kept in the chapter archive of Novara, where it is written Uuaralo. In the Latin documents it later reads Varalli Pombiae, and elsewhere Varallum Plumbiense.

According to some scholars Varallo could derive from variarius, in the sense of uncultivated, rough ground. The comune lies between the Ticino and Monte Bugno, belongs with eleven others to the Piedmontese park of the Ticino, and is crossed by the European path linking the north of the continent to the Mediterranean: here it enters the woods of the Paniscèra.
