Saint Margaret, patron of the land of the villas on Lake Maggiore
📅 Every year, on 20 July
Meina celebrates Saint Margaret on 20 July, in the church dedicated to her.
The village was called Màdina and first appears in 951 as a corte regia, a district that fed itself. The church people here call la Madonnina began as a chapel raised where three old roads met, dedicated to Sancta Maria ad fontes, and it took over from the Celtic and Roman cult of the Matronae, the goddesses who looked after fertility.
In the nineteenth century the Tiasca stream drove paper mills, a silk spinning works and a lubricating-oil factory, and the coat of arms holds both Meinas together: a bunch of grapes and a cogwheel. In September 1943 the SS killed sixteen Italian Jews at the Hotel Meina; since 2015 stumbling stones at the landing stage have remembered them.
