Pisano

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 770 · Postal code: 28010

Pisano sits on the Vergante hills between Meina and Nebbiuno, strung out along a single medieval street. Its name may come from two Roman landowners, Pisius or Pisone. The earliest written mention dates from around 1280, in a Milanese list of churches, under the name S. Eusebio de Pexsana.

That church, dedicated to Saint Eusebius, still stands in the middle of the village, with its porch and bell tower. The parish, split off from Nebbiuno by leave of Carlo Borromeo, long followed the Ambrosian rite and moved to the Roman one only in 1817, when it joined the diocese of Novara. The village arms carry a peach tree: peaches grown here once reached Switzerland.
