Colazza

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 463 · Postal code: 28010

The name Colazza has several explanations; the village coat of arms shows an arm gripping an axe. Tradition says that in 960 a young man used it to defend his bride from a lordling in Berengario II's pay who claimed the ius primae noctis; the two fled to the plateau, others followed, and the first settlement grew there. Other readings point to the hills, or to springs.

The parish church of the Immacolata went up in two stages, late seventeenth century and nineteenth; inside, a fresco close to Gaudenzio Ferrari's school, probably from an old votive shrine. Outside, a portico on stone columns and the bell tower with its clock.
