Almese

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 6,303 · Postal code: 10040

Almese lies in the lower Val di Susa, along the Messa stream, in a place that has always been a passage: from here people went down to Turin, across to the Canavese, and up the valley to the Alpine passes. The name comes from the Gallo-Roman Almo, and that of the stream from Mettius.

In the nineteen-eighties archaeologists from the university of Turin dug out a Roman villa that had belonged to a certain Calvinus, who lived off the traffic in goods and people at the customs post of Ad fines: it was abandoned in the fourth century and can now be visited. In the fourteenth century the village became a castle of refuge, and the Romanesque bell tower was turned into a massive defensive tower.
