Buttigliera Alta

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 6,386 · Postal code: 10090

Buttigliera Alta lies in the lower Susa valley, some twenty-five kilometres west of Turin: the main settlement on the hill forming the right moraine of the Rivoli-Avigliana amphitheatre, the hamlet of Ferriera at the foot of it. It belonged to Avigliana and became autonomous on 25 April 1619, when Giovanni Carron received the fief and the title of count from Charles Emmanuel I.

The hamlet was born of a factory. In 1890 Alfonso and Giuliano Vandel chose this stretch of valley for their works making shoe nails; the workers' village that grew there, four hundred people, was annexed in 1891 and named Ferriera after the French town the Vandels came from. In 1917 FIAT took the plant over.
