Chiomonte

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 932 · Postal code: 10050

Chiomonte lies in the upper Susa valley, on the right bank of the Dora Riparia. The name comes from Caput Montium, or Calcis Mons, after the lime quarries here. For centuries it was the border with the French Dauphiné; Louis XIII and Richelieu stayed here in 1629, and the upper valley passed to Savoy only with the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713.

The parish church of Santa Maria keeps wooden sculptures and frescoes, and on the town's arms the sun ripens two bunches of grapes, black and white, under a French motto: Jamais sans toi. In the mid-sixteenth century a local man, Colombano Romean, dug the waterworks called Gran Pertus, the great hole.
