Giaglione

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 653 · Postal code: 10050

Giaglione stands high in the Val di Susa, where three valleys meet — the Cenischia, the Clarea and Susa's own — on the road to the Mont Cenis pass. Its arms show a cockerel on a meadow beneath a golden sun, with the motto Audaciter vigilo: I keep watch boldly.

The first traces are from the eighth century, when wealthy valley families held the lordship from fortified castles. Around 1230 the Aschieri De Jalliono built the Castello Superiore, now a ruin, while lower down the Menate stronghold survives on a terrace above the valley. At Santo Stefano a chapel carries a fifteenth-century fresco of the cavalcade of the vices on its outer wall.
