Gravere

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 715 · Postal code: 10050

The name Gravere comes from the Latin glarea, gravel, after the stony deposits of the streams, the Gelassa above all. The area had other names before that: Luximonte in the will of Abbo, founder of Novalesa, then Yallasse after the stream, finally Le Graviere. The comune is some ten hamlets, and none is called Gravere.

It depended on Susa in everything until 1609, when the inhabitants built the new church themselves and got a parish, in the small central hamlet of Refornetto; autonomy followed in 1621. The parish church is titled the Nativity of Mary. Until 1713 this was the first village of Savoy for anyone coming from Chiomonte, which lay in the Dauphiné.
