Coazze

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,084 · Postal code: 10050

In 1901 Luigi Pirandello spent a month's holiday here. On the bell tower of the church of Coazze a motto is written, "Ognuno a suo modo", each in his own way, and from it came the title of one of his best-known plays, Ciascuno a suo modo.

The name comes from the Latin covum, a cavity, a hiding place. From the fourteenth century iron was dug in the mountains above Forno di Coazze: the ore went down to the hamlet of Ferria to be sorted and then to the forges — the first on record dates from 1430 — and the valley's woods gave the charcoal for smelting. It went on that way until the middle of the nineteenth century.
