Sant'Antonino di Susa

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,333 · Postal code: 10050

The oldest settlement was the borgo of Sant'Agata, seat of the provostry of San Desiderio. In 1043 the lords of San Giusto di Susa, the marquis Enrico and his wife, had the church built for the canons of Sant'Agostino that still stands in the middle of the village. The historic route of the Via Francigena runs through here, heading on towards Vaie and Sant'Ambrogio.

In 1900 the comune sold cheaply the land on which the Wild e Abegg cotton mill was built; in 1914 it took the name Cotonificio Vallesusa and drew its workforce from all around. Its financial collapse at the end of the sixties left this village and its neighbours without work.
