Verolengo

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,962 · Postal code: 10038

The arms of Verolengo show a rampant boar, recognised by a decree of 6 February 1943. Two readings of the beast survive: the local pig farms, or plain assonance with the name, which some derive from old settlements of the Eruli, Verulengum.

On the main square, the crossing of the cardo and decumanus of the old Roman camp, stand the church of San Giovanni Battista and, facing it, the oldest house in the place, said by tradition to be the Roman governor's. The church was named for Santa Maria di Piazza and took the Baptist's name only in the nineteenth century.
