Lauriano

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,493 · Postal code: 10020

Lauriano appears as «Lavriana» in the edict Otto III issued from Rome in 999 to confirm wide lands to the bishop of Vercelli; later documents make it «Levranum», then «Labriano», differences put down to scribes writing from dictation. Its arms join the laurel, echoing the name, and a capital, for the Roman town of Industria that stood in these parts.

The parish has moved twice: from the Romitorio on the highest hill, a church of Saint Mary by 1113 beside castle ruins now nearly hidden by brambles, to a Sant'Eusebio on the flat gone by the sixteenth century, and at last down to the village, under the clock tower. The registers begin only in 1626, after floods of the Po and sackings.
