Between the 12th and 14th centuries, Chivasso commanded regional influence as the capital of the Marquisate of Montferrat. The Piedmontese town held this political prestige until the ruling court eventually relocated to Casale. Despite this deep historical connection, modern geography places the municipality firmly within the Canavese area rather than the Montferrat territory.
Originally established as the Roman settlement of Clavasium, the present-day town sits on the left bank of the Po River near the mouth of the Orco. Located roughly 20 kilometers northeast of Turin, it is home to just under 26,000 residents. The surrounding plain is dotted with its administrative hamlets, including Montegiove and Castelrosso.
