Anzola d'Ossola

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 448 · Postal code: 28877

Anzola lies on the Toce plain, under the north flank of Monte Massone, and in midwinter the sun never reaches the village: a nineteenth-century dictionary listed that among the place's traits, together with cherries that ripened here in early May. The name appears in 1006, when the bishop of Novara leased half of four farmsteads to a certain Grimaldo for a hundred pounds of cheese a year.

The only building of note left from the Middle Ages is the church of San Tomaso, a parish since 1603. That promotion raised the bell tower: the villagers and a benefactor built it massive, in bare stone, with the clock below the belfry, finishing it in 1674.
