Pieve Vergonte

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,644 · Postal code: 28886

The town has changed its name more than once: in the documents it is Virgonto, Vergunto, Vergonto, Vergunti, Vergonte, and at one point even Pietra Santa. The Agoni seem to have settled in this country, and a trace of them survives in the names of the river Agogna and of nearby Vogogna.

When the Cimbri came down into Italy, the consul Quintus Lutatius Catulus went up the Toce and fortified himself in two castles: Plutarch, in the Life of Marius, puts them one on each side of the river, not far from ancient Vergunto and from Vogogna. The Romans had to withdraw, though, and the small garrison left behind was beaten easily.
