Feast of Santa Maria Assunta
📅 Every year, on 15 August
On 15 August Massiola, a municipality of 137 inhabitants in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, celebrates its patroness Santa Maria Assunta (Assumption of Mary).
Massiola stands in the middle Valle Strona, north of the stream, and only one road leads in, entering the territory at Piana di Fornero. The name comes from an older form, Massigliola, a small farmstead. In the geographical dictionary compiled in the nineteenth century by Goffredo Casalis, the village and nearby Marmo share the history of the whole valley: woodworking, above all the cazzulj, the wooden spoons, and the quarrying of marble, which gave the hamlet its name. Massiola has been an independent municipality since 1955; before that it belonged to Valstrona.
The coat of arms sets a tower with a silver roof and a two-light window, but no door, beside an uprooted horse chestnut with trunk and roots showing; above, on a gold field, a falcon in flight with its head in profile. The highest point of the municipality is the Cima Scaravini, over two thousand metres and shared with Anzola d'Ossola, while the lowest is at Marmo itself, on the provincial road.
