Masera

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,527 · Postal code: 28855

Masera first appears in writing in June 970, when Bishop Aupaldo of Novara gave a priest from Vogogna a plot of land “in loco et feudo Maxerie”. From 1439 it belonged to the Borromeo, under whom Masera, Trontano, Beura and Cardezza won some self-government as the Four Lands; Masera was the capital, and the Borromeo agent's small palace still stands in the hamlet of Carale.

At the mouth of the Vigezzo valley the oratory of Sant'Abbondio stands on a rock, with a stone-slab roof and an eleventh-century Romanesque bell tower. The village museum, the Museo dello Spallone, is devoted to the small-time mountain smugglers.
