Trontano

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,702 · Postal code: 28859

Trontano is not one village but many: the hamlets are scattered along the mountainside, and the main settlement sits at 520 metres on the road climbing from Domodossola towards the Valle Vigezzo. The houses are dry stone, roofed with slabs; above them rise Monte Togano and Monte Tignolino, and part of the territory lies in the Val Grande national park.

The church of the Natività di Maria is ancient in origin, reworked in the sixteenth century and again later. Its bell tower stands apart from the body of the building: Romanesque, it goes back to the year 1000.
