Oggebbio

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 881 · Postal code: 28824

Oggebbio, Ugebi in dialect, is not one village but fifteen: a scattered comune with hamlets on the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore and the slopes behind, the town hall at Gonte. The name is said to come from the Latin Eugebium, land of sweet living. Gonte also has the parish church of San Pietro, which split from the pieve of San Vittore at Intra in 1606.

Uphill, at Novaglio, stands the oratory of Sant'Agata, bare stone, Romanesque in plan, later reworked with Gothic and Renaissance elements; in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries its orientation was reversed. Legend makes it one of the hundred churches founded in the fourth century by Saints Julius and Julian.
